Rundale Palace (located 80 km south of Riga and only 15 km from the border with Lithuania) is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo art in Latvia. It was constructed in the 1730s to a design by Bartolomeo Rastrelli as a summer residence of Ernst Johann von Biron, the Duke of Courland.
The major part of the interior work was done in the period between 1765 and 1768. The Italian masters from St. Petersburg, Francesco Martini and Carlo Zucchi, created paintings on the ceilings and walls while sculptor Johann Michael Graff from Berlin made stucco decorat ions on a background of artificial marble. The palace is also very popular for its reconstructed French formal garden.
